Stay Healthy While Self-Isolating

Stay Healthy While Self-Isolating

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is still important while social distancing. Whether you’re self-isolating or you have an older loved one staying home, now’s the time to start a healthy routine or motivate someone to start theirs. Keep reading to find out ways you can make the most out of your health while staying home during the pandemic.

Doing At-Home Exercises

It’s the perfect time to try out new at-home workouts and see what works best for you. If you or your loved one is less mobile, there are great chair workouts to try, too!

  1. Wall Push-Ups: Put your hands against a sturdy wall and lean in, keeping your body straight and bending your elbows. Stop once your face nears the wall and push your body away by straightening your arms. You can stand as close or as far away from the wall as you would like. This is great for older adults since you don’t have to get down on the floor.

  1. Calf Raises: Find a counter or supportive surface to place your hands on. Push yourself onto your tippy toes as high as you’re able and return to flat feet. Doing this exercise works your calves well but doesn’t require much movement at all.

  1. Chair Knee Extensions: Having a reliable and comfortable chair is the key to this exercise. Sit down with straight posture and your knees bent while holding on to the side of the chair. Extend your legs, one at a time, pointing your toes to the ceiling until they are just slightly bent. Continue this exercise on each leg for multiple repetitions to strengthen your leg muscles while sitting down.

  1. Chair Arm Raises: Sit back down in your comfortable chair with your feet flat on the floor and your back straight. Slowly raise your arms above your head, pause, then lower them back down. This simple movement can be done without weights, or light weights can be added for more impact.

Avoiding the Grocery Store

Grocery stores have made staying home much easier with their pick-up or delivery options. Say good-bye to ordering fast food and getting takeout to avoid the crowds – you can still make healthy meals without going inside the grocery store. Here are some options to consider:

  1. Pick-Up: Most stores have an online ordering option, allowing you to shop and pay all online. They have pick-up lanes waiting at the store so you can drive up and get your groceries without even leaving your car.

  1. Grocery Delivery: Many businesses, such as Instacart, allow you to order your groceries from your favorite store and have them delivered right to your home in the same day. This is great for older people who don’t want to leave their homes.

  1. Ask a Friend: If you’re self-isolating and can’t leave the house, you can rely on a trusted family member or friend to help you out. Either give them a list or order online to make it easier. They can drop it off at your doorstep just like a delivery service. Don’t be afraid to reach out – many people would be more than happy to help!

Having Your Products Delivered

There’s no reason to worry about visiting a store for your products when delivery is an option. Just like groceries, nearly any product you need can be brought to your doorstep. Whether it’s clothing, bathroom items or even home medical equipment, it’s possible.

At Merrick Surgical Supplies & Home Care, we offer white glove delivery for all our customers. Not only will we deliver any HME product you need, but we can also set it up and make sure it works properly for your convenience. Your health is important and staying home and away from crowds is one way to avoid getting sick. While you’re social distancing, remember to stay active by doing at-home workouts and fuel your body with nutritious foods by ordering fresh produce online. For any of your home medical equipment needs, we’re here to help. We hope you’re staying healthy and positive during these uncertain times!
