5 Ways to Make Your Home Safe for the Holidays

5 Ways to Make Your Home Safe for the Holidays

With the holidays approaching, it’s important to keep your home a safe place. During this time, there is more theft and house fires, so knowing how to prevent these will ensure that you and your family will be safe. If you are interested in learning more about how you can keep your home safe during the holiday season, keep reading.

Keep Travel Plans Offline

If you are traveling for the holiday season, it is important to keep it off your social media networks. Once you are home, then feel free to share all the pictures taken of family and friends. Keeping your travel plans offline will decrease the risk of a burglar figuring out that you are gone and intruding in your home. Even if you have the highest security on your social media accounts, it is still never a good idea.

Notify A Neighbor

If you decide to travel during the holidays, notify a neighbor that you trust to keep an eye on your home while you are away. This way, if there is any suspicious activity, you can be notified and deal with it accordingly.

During winter months, making arrangements to have someone shovel your driveway and sidewalks is a great idea so that snow does not pile up while you’re away. It’s also a good idea to halt mail and package deliveries while you are away so they do not get stolen. You can easily do this by calling your mail delivery service.

Hide Packages and Gifts

Keeping gifts out of sight of children is already something that most people do; however, keeping them out of sight from potential burglars is also important. Although it looks nice to keep wrapped presents under the tree, burglars can look in and want to take those items. Try to keep your tree away from windows or other places of view to help with this security issue.

Don’t forget to keep the presents you do not have yet safe as well. People tend to steal packages from porches or steps. To keep this from happening, install a doorbell camera to warn people off, or catch them if anything is stolen.

Watch Your Christmas Lights

Fires tend to increase during the holiday season with the usage of Christmas lights. Before you set up any lights, make sure to inspect them so they are in proper working condition by looking for frayed cords or cracked bulbs.

It is also important to turn off any lights before heading out or before calling it a night. This will decrease the chances of them catching on fire. Getting an outdoor timer for your outside lights will make sure that everything gets shut off at the end of each day.

Install A Security Camera

This is the most obvious, but the best way to make sure that your home stays safe. Home security systems that have an alarm that notifies the security company when tripped may be pricey, but your home insurance might be able to help. Otherwise, there are do-it-yourself ones out there that send a notification to your smartphone when suspicious activity occurs. You can even make it so your lights turn on whenever the door is unlocked.

The holidays can be a fun and exciting time as long as you stay safe during them. By implementing these few tips, you and your family can stay safe, sit back, relax and have a good time with all your family and friends!
